Legal Support interviews can vary significantly from firm to firm. Some are more behavioural and structured, while others are much more conversational and focused on getting to know you, your experience and how you would fit within the team. Preparing for both styles will help you feel more confident and make sure you can talk through your experience clearly, with examples ready when needed.
Expect "tell me about a time", not just "tell me about your experience"
Interviewers will often ask for a specific, real example rather than a general description of a duty. They want to understand how you have handled situations in practice, whether that is managing competing priorities, dealing with a difficult stakeholder or solving a problem. Having a few strong examples prepared will make these questions much easier to answer.
STAR or SAO questions
STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result), also known as SAO (Situation, Action, Outcome), behavioural questions are often the ones candidates feel most nervous about and can easily rush. The interviewer is not looking for a perfect answer. They want to understand how you communicate, approach a situation, solve problems and take positive action. Keep your answer clear and structured, explain what you personally did and always finish with the result or outcome.
It is okay to answer hypothetically
Despite popular belief, it is sometimes okay to answer a behavioural question hypothetically, particularly if you are still early in your career and genuinely have not experienced the situation before. Be honest, then clearly explain how you would approach it, including the positive steps you would take, how you would communicate, how you would solve the problem and what you would hope the outcome to be. The interviewer still gets to see how you think and how you are likely to handle the situation in practice.
Questions worth preparing for specifically
- Tell me about a time you managed a difficult partner or fee earner
- Describe a time you identified an error in a legal document before it went out
- Tell me about a time you had to manage genuinely conflicting deadlines
- Describe handling a difficult or upset client
- Tell me about a time you had to learn a new system or process quickly
Speak in "I", not just "we"
Teamwork and being a strong team player are incredibly important in Legal Support roles. However, when an interviewer asks about your experience, achievements or the outcome of a particular situation, they want to understand what you personally did. Be clear about your own contribution, the actions you took and the difference you made, even when the overall result was a team effort.
Prepare a few strong examples
You do not need a different example for every possible interview question. Instead, prepare a few strong situations from your experience that you know well and can adapt depending on what you are asked. This will help your answers feel more natural and make it easier to respond confidently without sounding overly rehearsed.
