Many legal secretaries assume the only way up is a bigger firm or a different title somewhere else. The more common, and often more sustainable, path is upward within legal support itself. It's rarely a single jump; it's a series of smaller steps, most of which start well before the job title actually changes.
The path is several steps, not one
A realistic route generally looks like Legal Secretary, through Senior or Team Legal Secretary, into a Team Leader or Supervisor position, and from there into Office or Practice Management, or a move into Legal Operations. Each stage adds a genuinely different kind of responsibility, not just a heavier version of the same tasks: the jump from doing the work well to being accountable for how a team does it is the real shift, and it's worth recognising it as its own skill to build.
The skills that actually get noticed
- Staff coordination and informal supervision, well before it's an official title
- Exposure to vendor or supplier relationships
- Designing a better process, not just following the existing one
- Involvement in recruitment or onboarding of new starters
- Confidence presenting to partners, not only supporting them
Put your hand up before the title exists
The most underused lever in this career path is volunteering for the "in-between" work: coordinating the team during a partner's leave, owning a new starter's induction, running a systems rollout, before any of it is formally part of the role. That's precisely the evidence a hiring manager, or an internal promotion panel, is actually looking for when deciding who's ready for the next step.
What the timeline realistically looks like
There is no fixed timeframe for moving into a leadership or Practice Manager role. For some people, the opportunity comes relatively early in their career, while for others it may take much longer. Progression often depends on the size and structure of the firm, the opportunities available and whether there is room to take on more responsibility. Sometimes moving to a firm with a larger team or clearer progression path can create opportunities that simply are not available in your current role.
Where a specialist recruiter actually helps
Not every firm has a formal practice manager ladder, and some titles mean genuinely different things from one firm to the next. A recruiter who works this market regularly can see which firms actually structure this career step, and which roles will build the right resume for where you're trying to go, rather than just the next available opening.
